Why Global Artisan Partnerships Are the Future of Retail
The Opportunity: The desire for human connection is palpable in today's market. Consumers are actively seeking pieces with visible handwork—products where they can immediately sense the maker behind them. Artisan and handmade goods have taken on new value for their authentic links to culture and heritage, creating a powerful opportunity for retailers to differentiate themselves and meet growing demand. The market has fundamentally changed. Increasingly sophisticated vendors, advanced shipping services, and streamlined payment options have opened the doors to sourcing globally. The world of unique, culturally rich products is more accessible—but only if you know how to navigate it.The Challenge: Despite these opportunities, many buyers struggle to find reliable global vendors with market-ready products. Questions abound: How do you identify qualified artisan brands? How do you ensure product quality and consistency? How do you build relationships across borders and cultures? How do you make these partnerships profitable?Speaker(s): Karen GibbsLocation: Pennsylvania Convention Center |

Getting the Team on the Same Page: Management Strategies for Multi-generational Teams.
Much has been said about the challenges of managing Gen Z as they enter the workforce—but far less about the reverse dynamic. This session flips the narrative to explore what Gen Z and Millennial leaders experience when managing multi-generational teams. We’ll examine the unique pressures, expectations, and misunderstandings that arise when younger professionals step into supervisory roles, and offer practical strategies for navigating them with confidence. Participants will learn how to address emerging management issues such as navigating cell-phone and social-media culture, building trust across age groups, handling difficult team dynamics, collaborating effectively with HR, and balancing generational preferences around résumés, cover letters, and workplace communication. We’ll also discuss what younger leaders can expect when supervising older employees and how to lead authentically while honoring diverse work styles. This session equips emerging leaders with actionable tools, real-world solutions, and a clearer understanding of how to thrive in multi-generational management. Mission Meets Margin: Award-Winning Commercial Innovation from the UK Cultural Sector
Across the UK, cultural organisations are redefining what commercial success looks like. Retail and catering are no longer viewed simply as revenue-generating functions, but as strategic tools that drive mission delivery, deepen audience engagement and strengthen long-term resilience.
Drawing on this year’s Association for Cultural Enterprises (AfCE) Award finalists, this session will showcase groundbreaking examples of commercial innovation from museums, historic sites and cultural institutions across the UK. From a museum café operating as a social enterprise supporting neurodivergent communities, to retail concepts such as “Charity for Everyone” developed by Historic Royal Palaces, these initiatives demonstrate how commercial thinking can strengthen, not dilute their cultural purpose. Rather than focusing solely on individual projects, this session will explore the common principles behind these award-winning initiatives: bold storytelling, audience-first design, operational discipline and mission alignment. Attendees will leave with practical insights and transferable frameworks that can be adapted to their own stores and cultural businesses, regardless of scale. Nuts & Bolts of Open to Buy
This session introduces Open-To-Buy (OTB) as an approachable, customizable planning tool for museum retailers—especially those who didn’t come from traditional retail backgrounds. Instead of treating OTB as a rigid corporate formula, the workshop breaks it into clear, manageable parts and shows how to adapt it to your museum’s mission, audience, size, and buying style. Participants will learn to build a personalized buying roadmap that supports healthy inventory levels, steady cash flow, and a store experience aligned with their institution’s story. Through practical examples, templates, and museum-specific scenarios, the session emphasizes intentional planning, avoiding overbuying, and making data-informed decisions—even for those who don’t love working with numbers. Attendees will leave with a confident grasp of OTB and a flexible system they can tailor to their own store. Speaker(s): Kirsten Parker, GatherWorks

Related or Unrelated - It’s Always a Question (UBIT)
Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) is not an exact science. It is a federal income tax paid by an institution on revenues generated by activities not related to its mission. Revenue generated by related activities is not subject to taxation and are a way to increase the net profits of the organization. The IRS has set up a somewhat murky system for assisting us in avoiding paying this tax. The tricky part of determining what sales meet the IRS criteria is that we have to somewhat suspend common sense to decide what they think is related and what is not. There is no clear identification of products and it varies between institutions. What is related for one may not be for another. When answering the relatedness question, any lawyer will tell you, “It depends.” It depends on: • Who you are (your institution’s mission and purpose) • What you sell (item by item) • How you sell it (with or without educational materials attached that describe the connection to your mission) This session is a lively exchange of products and cases for relatedness. Experienced buyers and a nonprofit tax attorney will conduct a mock review of each product submitted by an assortment of museums, botanical gardens, performing arts centers, and more. Passionate arguments may ensue! Participate in this hands-on experience to better understand the nuances of buying and reporting related and unrelated products for your store.

Stories Sell: Learning the Art of Leveraging Social Media to Share Yours
"Stories Sell: Learning the Art of Leveraging Social Media to Share Yours" is a practical, strategy-focused seminar designed to help museum stores, small retailers, and independent makers grow their presence and impact on social media—without needing big budgets or large teams. This session explores how storytelling can be a powerful marketing tool, building trust and emotional connection in the arts, culture, and retail sectors. Attendees will learn why sharing the story behind a brand or product matters and how it can differentiate them in a competitive market. The seminar covers the evolving role of social media, emphasizing the shift from hard selling to authentic connection. Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok will be explored for their strengths in the museum and wholesale space, with a focus on engagement over follower counts. Special attention will be given to behind-the-scenes content—such as order packing, product development, staff highlights, and captivating stories—as a way to humanize brands and increase transparency. Additional topics include working with micro-influencers and collaborating with local artists or museum staff to build community and visibility. Interactive segments will include content brainstorming and brand storytelling exercises. Attendees will leave with practical takeaways such as a 30-day content idea worksheet and a curated list of recommended tools and resources. This seminar is ideal for anyone looking to amplify their voice and connect more meaningfully with their audience.

Visual Merchandising Fundamentals for Museum Stores
Successful museum stores are designed with people at the center. From the moment a visitor approaches the entrance to their final interaction at the cash wrap, every detail of the environment shapes the shopping experience and influences purchasing decisions. This session introduces the fundamental principles of visual merchandising, grounded in human physical and behavioral tendencies. We’ll explore how approach and entry, intuitive store layouts, and the customer journey guide visitors naturally through the space. Participants will learn best practices in fixture merchandising—how to place, group, and present products to leverage human tendencies, highlight stories, and maximize sales. Special attention will be given to the importance of mirrors and fitting rooms in driving apparel and accessories sales, as well as the role of impulse merchandising as both a department and a strategic component of the cash wrap experience. Together, these tools demonstrate how subtle design choices can support accessibility, encourage add-on sales, and contribute to lasting positive impressions. Whether launching a new store or refreshing an existing one, this session equips managers with practical, human-centered strategies to create engaging, mission-driven shopping experiences that strengthen both visitor connection and revenue.

This session explores how museum stores can effectively recruit, onboard, and support Gen Z employees as they become a significant share of the workforce. Entering the job market during economic uncertainty, Gen Z brings strong expectations around transparency, mental health, and purpose-driven work. The session outlines practical strategies for attracting and retaining this generation through clear communication, mission-aligned hiring, and supportive workplace practices. Key takeaways include: adopting transparent recruitment and salary practices; using values-based interviewing and realistic job previews; designing onboarding that connects retail roles to organizational mission; establishing consistent feedback systems; and integrating low-cost wellness supports into daily operations. From Insight to Impact: How Data and Analysis is Driving Smarter RetaiFrom Insight to Impact: How Data and Benchmarking Drive Smarter Retail Decisions
In an increasingly complex and volatile operating environment, museum retail teams are being asked to do more with less, while still delivering meaningful visitor experiences and sustainable income. This talk looks at how museums in the UK are using data to understand changing audience and consumer behaviour, to make informed business-critical decisions.
Drawing on findings from a national survey conducted across the UK cultural sector, the Association for Cultural Enterprises’ Commercial Performance Barometer, this session focuses on what sector-wide data reveals about changing visitor behaviour and how museum retailers are responding in practice.
Many organisations already collect large amounts of data, but far fewer feel confident turning that data into insight they can act on. Find out what UK museums are doing to respond to changing audience and consumer behaviours, for example focusing on seasonal planning. The challenges and opportunities are universal and highly relevant to US museum retailers navigating economic pressure and shifting audiences. Participants will leave with practical examples of how data can be translated into meaningful analysis and storytelling to support smarter, more confident decision-making. Speaker(s): Tom Dawson
