Overview

LeadingAge California is currently accepting applications for its Innovation Challenge Award. The award encourages organizations with best practices in service delivery or technology that improve the well-being of older adults to compete to win cash prizes and raise the visibility of a provider organization or business. In its inaugural year, LeadingAge California will award a $10,000 cash prize to the 1st Place Winner as well as recognition at the 2020 Annual Conference. An exclusive opportunity to meet key provider members in a decision-making position to discuss their product or idea will occur during the 2020 Annual Conference. Additional recognition and prizes will be given to the top 10 Innovation Challenge Award finalists on May 19, 2020 at the Opening General Session of LeadingAge California’s Annual Conference.
 
Goals
  1. Highlight innovative products and/or best practices in service delivery that are transformative and promising to improve the quality of life for seniors.
  2. Promote a culture of innovation in aging services technologies and best practices to improve practices and increase quality of care.
  3. Raise the visibility of innovators in the field of housing, care and services for older adults.
 
What kind of entries are we looking for?
LeadingAge California is seeking problem-based entries from technology companies, consultants, provider organizations or others who can demonstrate true innovation in care, housing and services for older adults. We encourage ideas that include evidenced-informed technologies, new approaches to care giving, life enrichment approaches, enhanced safety and security, and improving quality of life.

What criteria/scoring process will be used
?
The winner will be selected by a panel of experts, the Innovation Forum Panel of Experts, appointed by LeadingAge California. Entries will be evaluated on specific predetermined criteria described below:
  1. Impact on Client Care and Satisfaction (25%): Best practices in service delivery and/or technology innovation that increase quality of life, healthcare outcomes, and well-being for older adults and/or improve recruitment or retention of workforce as demonstrated by outcomes.
  2. Market Experience (20%): A track record in the market of housing, care and services for older adults indicates a potentially viable concept. We will review market penetration, units sold, revenue generated or other indicators that demonstrate market experience.
  3. Replicability (15%): Addresses ability that has already brought or demonstrates evidence of how it could scale to a broader market.
  4. Impact on Workforce(10%): Minimal impact on staff that increases efficiencies, requires minimal training and a high ease-of-use are preferred.
  5. Cost (10%): A reasonable price point and cost of implementation are key factors to many organizations selecting a concept. Proposals also will be evaluated for their accessibility to middle and lower income seniors.
  6. Risk Management and Regulatory Clearance (5%): Concepts that impact organizational risk management, and may help to reduce exposure to litigation; have been cleared for use by regulatory agencies.
  7. Interoperability (5%): Concepts that are compatible with existing technology or programs are preferred.
  8. Reimbursement/Sustainability (5%): Concepts that are reimbursable by third-parties, such as private insurance, Medicare, Medi-cal, are preferred.
  9. Privacy & Security (5%): Complies with HIPAA and data security procedures, where appropriate.
What are the key dates and timeline for the award?
January 6, 2019 - Applications Open
February 29, 2020 – Application Deadline (Extended until March 6)
March 11, 2020 - Finalists Identified  (March 20)
May 18-20, 2020 - Popular Voting Occurs Electronically
May 18, 2020 – Top 10 Finalist in Innovation Showcase and Video Show at Opening General Session of Annual Conference
May 20, 2020 - Final Winner(s) Announced at Closing General Session of Annual Conference
