In this presentation, Nora Gomperts and Amy Nicholson from Turnaround for Children will discuss how stress and trauma impact students' brains and bodies and how educators can use the new 3Rs -- relationships, routines, and resilience -- to design learning remote, hybrid, or in-person learning environments that promote whole-child learning and development. Educators will leave with a better understanding of the science and with practical strategies that they can implement this fall to unlock student potential, especially in uncertain and challenging times.

This introductory & interactive session will walk you through the creation process as you design your own virtual classroom for students to access, whether learning is in-person or remote! We will cover the following:
- Uses of a virtual classroom
- Setting up your basic classroom with a background, furniture, your avatar, and more
- Tips & Tricks for adding custom features and interactive elements for students
- Additional resources to use in your virtual classroom

This session will start by looking at how we can get to know who are students are as people and learners. K-2 Can be Creative Too! In this session we will discover how digital tools can be utilized in the primary and elementary classroom to take students from technology consumers to creators. You will be introduced to creative digital tools that help showcase student learning!

COVID shutdowns have pushed teacher and school leaders, but has also provided an opportunity to reflect and improve on how to build community, grading and assessment, communication, and social-emotional learning. This session will explore the choices one elementary school in Chicago made before and during the COVID shutdown in these areas and the plans that are in place for potential closures next school year.

A recent study from Common Sense Media found that students are turning away from traditional media organizations and getting current events information from social media and YouTube. It was estimated that more than half of teens get their news at least a few times a week from social media platforms. This session will illustrate, explain, and share strategies to help educators understand how to reach today's students in the ways they gather information, and ways to help students understand and distinguish media bias vs. reputable sources (UPDATED based on recent events).

For remote teaching to be engaging for all learners, educators must consider the academic, career, and social and emotional learning of their students. This requires savvy lessons that focus on equity, incorporate sound teaching strategies, edtech with breakout room capabilities, interactive slides, and to be social enough for the most digitally connected students.

While student engagement in a remote setting remains a huge challenge, we can tweak and enhance the hands-on work that motivates kids in classrooms to great effect. Design Thinking and Making for Remote Learning will introduce teachers to a series of design challenges and games to engage students, while sparking creativity and problem-solving in any environment. Teachers will leave with a host of tools to get kids designing, thinking, and making.

As we prepare to enter into the new frontier of education this Fall, "school" will look different than it ever has before. With the world facing multiple pandemics all at once, it's important that we start the year with healing, that we begin and continue with SEL (Social Emotional Learning). We are all concerned about our students and how they are handling their stress. During this interactive session, we will examine the impact of stress on learning and look at how Social Emotional Learning, SEL, can help us to create more supportive learning environments.
