Academic Connections: Inspiration, Reflection, and Networking for Teachers of SS Methods
Nearly all elementary and secondary teacher candidates take a social studies methods course. But do these courses achieve what we want for them and what exactly do we want? Some of us have long experience preparing teachers, and we center such work in our professional lives. Others of us are adjuncts whose primary role is in K-12 classrooms or other settings, and we may not always be part of the national organizations and conversations that have developed around social studies teacher preparation. And all of us may wonder how to respond to emerging trends specific to California, such as preparing teachers for ethnic studies, or helping them negotiate the conflicts breaking out over controversial topics in localities throughout the state. This meeting is an opportunity for us to share our collective wisdom, by teaching and learning from each other in an informal setting. Our second year in this space, collaborating, doing the work to gain inspiration and insight as we collectively reflect on our hopes for the methods course, and share both our challenges and our successes.
After a catered lunch, expect an afternoon of collaboration, inspiration, networking and special guest speakers. FACILITATORS- Rebecca Valbuena & Chris Lewis Location: Garden 2 |

Student to Student: Peer-to-Peer Learning that Builds Empathy, Curiosity, and Global Awareness
Explore how peer-to-peer education strengthens Holocaust instruction while deepening cross-curricular learning in middle and high school classrooms. Student to Student (STS) is a national program — now in its fifth year in Orange County — in which trained Jewish teens visit grades 6–12 classrooms to share their lived experiences, identity, history, and culture through interactive presentations and dialogue. STS aligns closely with California’s Holocaust and genocide education mandates, including SB1277, by incorporating personal narrative as contemporary primary source perspective, fostering critical inquiry into the causes and consequences of antisemitism, and helping students connect historical events to present-day issues. The program supports educators in meeting state requirements while building empathy, civic responsibility, and ethical reflection. Beyond Holocaust education, STS integrates seamlessly into Human Geography, Ethnic Studies, World History, Ancient Civilizations, and Leadership studies. Presentations explore themes of diaspora, migration, identity formation, cultural continuity, minority experiences, and moral courage — expanding upon existing curriculum frameworks and adding a dynamic, three-dimensional layer to classroom learning. With a proven record of positive impact across grades 6–12, STS helps counter misinformation, deepen understanding of Jewish identity, and proactively combat rising antisemitism. Students consistently report high engagement with the peer-to-peer format and value the interactive nature of the presentations. Join educators, administrators, student ambassadors, and alumni as they share how youth voices can enrich social studies education, strengthen school climate, and bring history to life in meaningful, standards-aligned ways. Little Arabia Walking Tour (RSVP Required)
California is home to the largest population of Arab-Americans in the United States. Given this year’s CCSS conference “Local Roots, Global Reach” the UCI History Project is collaborating with the Arab American Civic Council (AACC) to provide a walking tour of Little Arabia on Sunday March 15th from 9am-12pm for history/ social studies educators. The Little Arabia District is an ethnic enclave in the city of Anaheim and is the first, and only, officially recognized Arab American enclave in the United States. It serves as the center for Orange County’s Arab-American community. Join us on this place-based learning experience and hear about the decades-long community organizing for recognition, interact with local businesses, and learn how the AACC engages local area students through tours and arts initiatives.
