Participants will explore less-known stories from history and examine how diversity in storytelling enriches the curriculum and opens possibilities for students. The History of European Antisemitism
Where does antisemitism come from? The phenomenon is over 2,000 years old, yet courses that deal with the Holocaust do not often consider pre-20th century history. This session outlines the larger context of antisemitism and offers the content teachers need, through interactive primary sources, to help students understand the origins and history of this form of hatred.

Why Personal Finance Belongs in Social Studies
Consensus has been building around the need for students to have access to high-quality personal finance education. Few things are as vulnerable, intimate, and quotidian as our finances; social studies prepares students to understand, navigate and meaningfully participate in society. Students’ ability to do so requires a sound understanding of personal finance, and the natural home is social studies.

Academic Connections: Inspiration, Reflection, and Networking for Teachers of SS Methods
Nearly all elementary and secondary teacher candidates take a social studies methods course. But do these courses achieve what we want for them and what exactly do we want? Some of us have long experience preparing teachers, and we center such work in our professional lives. Others of us are adjuncts whose primary role is in K-12 classrooms or other settings, and we may not always be part of the national organizations and conversations that have developed around social studies teacher preparation. And all of us may wonder how to respond to emerging trends specific to California, such as preparing teachers for ethnic studies, or helping them negotiate the conflicts breaking out over controversial topics in localities throughout the state. This meeting is an opportunity for us to share our collective wisdom, by teaching and learning from each other in an informal setting. Hopefully, this space will be (and will continue to be in future years) a setting in which each of us can gain inspiration and insight as we collectively reflect on our hopes for the methods course, and share both our challenges and our successes. After a catered lunch, expect an afternoon of collaboration, inspiration, networking and special guest speaker, Professor Keith C. Barton, Indiana University. SPEAKER/PRESENTER - Rebecca Valbuena

The DBQ Project: How DBQ Online Helps Create Inquiry and Literacy Centered Classrooms in Social Studies
Through the DBQ Online platform, educators will learn how to effectively support the History/Social Science Framework with the DBQ Project 6-Step Methodology. Educators will actively engage in inquiry and literacy strategies, highlighting certain steps of the methodology that support critical thinking, reading comprehension, and evidence-based writing. Emphasis will be placed on differentiation within the platform, to further support teaching and learning. Additionally, we will explore our newest features, including audio feedback to support the assessment loop and the custom binder option. The custom binder is a viable option to support schools/districts as they develop or refine their Ethnic Studies course offerings, providing access to more “voices/stories”, within the various units. Educators will conclude the session with the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues to develop or expand on a school/district plan to support inquiry, literacy, writing and technology, with the DBQ Project
