What’s the Why! Understanding Point of View
We will focus on point of view, prepare K-5 students for analyzing texts, thinking critically. Individuals/groups have a “why” for their point of view. Can people have the same point of view and different “whys”? This skill leads to effective discourse and prompts students to find out what fueled a historical/current event.

Crossing Borders: The Reconciliation of a Nation of Immigrants
One of our nation’s best coalition builders, Ali Noorani, President and CEO of the National Immigration Forum speaks exclusively to CCSS members about the moving stories of American immigrants and their journeys. Mr. Noorani presents the complexities of migration through families fleeing violence and poverty. Ali has spent years building bridges between immigrants and their often conservative communities. This keynote introduces CCSS members to modern-day migrants and the people that help them on both sides of the border. Going beyond partisan debate, Noorani offers insight as to why families make the decision to leave home and offers workable and real solutions to our nation's immigration crisis. No matter where you sit on the political spectrum, you will have a more humane and nuanced understanding of our country's immigration issues after this session.

Curriculum for Justice and Harmony: How can we help students work toward a better world?
The time is right for a new way of thinking about social studies. We need to consider how to help students make decisions that enable all people to lead rich and meaningful lives—locally, national, and globally. This requires giving students experience deliberating public issues, at all ages. It also means carefully selecting the kinds of knowledge we ask them to engage with, in order to cultivate their sense of benevolence, help them hear perspectives different than their own, and develop an ability to take wise action in public life.

Whose Eyes See the Past? Whose Agency Do We Feature?: Troubling History for Troubling Times
If the measure of a free society is the degree to which its members exercise individual and collective agency in informed, intelligent, and humane ways and demand the same from national and global institutions, we social studies teachers teach in troubled times. This session focuses on the challenge, in this new era, of helping students inquire into troubling histories with a degree of subtlety that encourages imagining themselves as collectively keeping a richly pluralist democracy alive, well, and in good hands.
