Can you tell me more about ASTA Legislative Day and why I should attend?

Did you know an in-person visit from a constituent is rated by congressional offices as the most effective way to influence policy? Every year, ASTA members from across the country come together in Washington, D.C., to speak to their elected representatives about critical issues affecting the travel industry and their businesses. Successful advocacy is about relationship-building. Legislative Day allows ASTA members to make these crucial connections with representatives on Capitol Hill.

What should I know about logistics regarding Legislative Day?

Plan for Wednesday, September 18, to be a full day on Capitol Hill. Since we only have a short window during which to schedule your congressional appointments, we ask that you make every attempt to stay in Washington, D.C. past 5 p.m. on this day. Should you choose to leave before 5 p.m., ASTA will not be responsible for rescheduling any meetings that are scheduled after your departure. Most attendees will leave D.C. on Thursday, following the event.

Because congressional appointments can and do change up until the last minute, your final schedule will not be available until the day before or the day of the event. ASTA cannot provide a final schedule in advance of the event, but will provide a preliminary schedule a few days before the event.

ASTA will schedule all appointments with your congressional delegation. To minimize confusion, do not schedule your own congressional appointments or contact any legislative office directly regarding your appointments. ASTA is coordinating a large number of meetings and we want to keep confusion to a minimum.

ASTA's 2023 Legislative Day successes:

In June 2023, ASTA members took two of the association's top priorities to their representatives on Capitol Hill — Reauthorization of the FAA that recognizes the role travel advisors play in the greater travel ecosphere, and funding an official government position dedicated to travel and tourism at the Department of Commerce.

Three of ASTA's priorities were included in the House FAA Reauthorization bill, including specific language clarifying that travel advisors should not be responsible for airline refunds if the travel agency never held the funds. While the funding process on Capitol Hill is currently fluid, both the House and Senate are poised to fund the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Travel and Tourism at Commerce.

225 attendees from 49 states conducted 230 congressional meetings, 40 of which were with Members of Congress.
