Application of AI Based Machine Learning to Development of Quality Measurements in Continuous Fiber Thermoplastic Composite Preforms

Automotive composite designers struggle to achieve maximum weight reductions due to variance in modulus and strength properties of input composite materials. Design engineers use significantly higher knock down factors when designing components with composites as compared to metallic materials. One issue faced in commingled continuous fiber thermoplastic composites is a measurement of commingling consistency. Coats has developed cutting edge software using AI based machine learning to analyze and quantify commingling consistency into a quality measurement we have termed; Coats Commingling Index (CCI). The ability to measure CCI allows the optimization of the commingling process in order to reduce variability in the continuous fiber thermoplastic molded components. This is turn will minimize material variability/knock down factors and maximize composite weight reductions. An overview of the CCI process will be presented.

ATCC Update: Next Generation Aerospace Composites

High performance thermoplastic composites (TPCs) have the potential to provide a unique set of properties such as toughness, fatigue resistance, quick cycle times, and recyclability. With all of these advantages, what is keeping thermoplastic composites from taking off? We received an update from an international slate of speakers last week during the ACMA Thermoplastic Composites Conference. ACMA’s Aerospace Thermoplastic Composites Collaborative (ATCC) has identified a number of growth areas and applications for thermoplastic matrix composites in the aerospace sector. Join us to learn about the ATCC, where it has been, and where it is going. Also learn how you can get involved in the development of next-generation composite materials, manufacturing methods, and applications.

Speakers:

Emma Morrissey, Composites Growth Initiative Intern | ACMA
MJ Carrabba, Director, Government Affairs | ACMA
