COVID-19 has disrupted the lives of everyone, especially underemployed adults who now find themselves dislocated and needing a career change. Simultaneously, employers in high growth industries are seeking talent to fill in-demand jobs. As a rapid response, LCCC launched in the Fall of 2020, over 20 Free Fast Track Programs that lead to an industry recognized credential. This rapid response initiative has led to 70% enrollment growth in short-term programs, expanded community collaborations and investments, while advancing LCCC’s equity commitment by increasing participation by at-risk and underrepresented learners. Data from the first cohort of students shows that 41% of students who enrolled are from underrepresented groups which far outpaces regional demographics highlighting the critical need to embed an equity-focus supporting learners. This workshop will demonstrate how LCCC utilized guided pathway principles to re-imagine student success in ways that change futures in weeks rather than years. Much has been noted about equity and credentials and the need to ensure that pursuing a non-credit credential does not become a dead-end for students who may eventually choose to upskill by pursuing additional credentials but must start from the beginning. Institutions must learn how to transition non-credit to credit credentials so that they are stackable and support upward mobility for learners. Nevertheless, where should institutions begin? The Making All Credits Count session offers participants the opportunity to learn from practitioner presidents' how they have engaged in efforts to build non-credit to credit pathways, which have made an enormous difference in their campuses' student success strategies. Budgets are already strained, and now institutions across the country have been forced to change the way students are served—from delivering instruction online to meeting student support needs through virtual platforms. Changing the way we do the business of higher education is expensive, and the need is immediate. Leveraging all available resources is paramount in responding to the pandemic and meeting the current needs of students, faculty, and staff. Presenters will lead participants through a decision-making process for managing and leveraging currently funded grants and preparing for future grant programs that focus on supporting students from onboarding to completion.

San Diego is growing STEM and CyberSecurity Hub and a strong employer base. However, traditional recruitment pipelines are focused on 4-year universities in the area and across the US, leaving a gap between community college students and employers in the area. There is an opportunity to connect students early in their academic careers with employment in their field of study while bridging the gap for employers in the area. Furthermore, there is a diversity gap found in the STEM field that can be immediately enriched and augmented by intentional recruitment efforts with diverse community colleges.

In Fall 2019 Lone Star College-University Park had created Online Faculty Fellows to evaluate online courses for the completion of components deemed critical for quality course design based upon QM standards. In Spring 2020 our Professional Development Faculty Fellow created a multi-track program called ELATE (E-Learning and Teaching Excellence) where faculty experience the learning management system from the student perspective while the facilitators model and provide research-based best practices that enhance the online learning experience. We will share the evolution of these programs from inception to implementation as we scaled them to meet the unique demands of Fall 2020.

At the height of the health pandemic, many community colleges were furiously raising emergency assistance funds. At HACC, we have had emergency assistance funds for more than a decade. Therefore, we stopped aggressively raising funds and accelerated using existing foundation funds to collaborate for student success. We created new student success partnerships and expanded old ones. The collaborators included Cabinet members, advancement colleagues, student affairs colleagues, foundation board members and donors. Most importantly, we helped students when they needed us the most, highlighted this student support during our marketing campaigns and helped to improve student enrollment.

Many HSIs are developing intentional strategies for supporting their Latino students —and these efforts are paying off as the percentage of young Latinos earning a college credential is making progress. As institutions continue to support Latino student success, however, it is important that they also focus on the particular needs of the Latino adult student whose postsecondary experiences may differ from students transitioning to college directly from high school. In this session, CAEL and South Texas College will share how the Latino Adult Student Success Academy initiative has helped STC identify key areas for Latino adult student success.

The introduction of Online Learning Navigators helped students remain enrolled, eased fears regarding online learning, and created high tech/high touch interactions that kept students connected to college resources. Additional Academic Support initiatives such as Library Grab and Go Services and a Faculty and Academic Support Collaboratorium create a strong foundation for a post-pandemic world.

The techniques used in an Face to Face workshop cannot simply be transferred online. This workshop employs techniques for both asynchronous and live online workshops to yield not only the benefits of revision, but also the importance of process over product. Lastly, workshops create opportunities for students to engage online, scaffolding and create a revision plan. This session will explore a reform strategy called Students First, which the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities has embarked on to restructure the community colleges in the state. This effort involves consolidating the 12 colleges into one institution, with a single accreditation, and implementing Guided Pathways as the statewide framework for student success. The goal is to equitably improve the student outcomes by streamlining processes and centralizing back-office functions to allow resources to be reallocated that, in turn, will provide greater student supports at the campuses. This session is based on a recent report that captures progress implementing Students First.

The Spring 2020 term was unceremoniously interrupted by COVID-19. While students were on spring break, decisions were made to move most instruction online for the duration of the semester. This met the needs of most students, but those in career and technical programs were not able to complete significant portions of hands-on learning through no fault of their own. The institution implemented a new grade – dubbed “E” for emerging – for use as the term officially ended. With a flexible approach, faculty and students finished courses over the summer at no additional cost. Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

One commonality among a diverse student body can be found in a simple word: Smartphone! With this in mind, our faculty developed instruction that can be readily accessed with only one device. Open educational resources and low-cost publisher materials were implemented in a majority of our online course offerings during this pandemic. In this session, we will explore this approach and also hear from the student’s perspective about learning with a smartphone and how it compares to the laptop experience.

Northeastern Technical College serves a large student population in rural South Carolina. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, NETC knew access to technology was critical for student success, which required creating new and strengthening existing business partnerships. NETC began work immediately with Sandhill Telephone Cooperative and Spectrum to provide free broadband service to all students to complete the spring semester. This provided in-home internet connectivity for not only student success, but also other members of the family. Most of the recipients are low-income and it provided the first exposure of technology to the family.

Course materials play a vital role in students’ success, yet over 50% were unprepared on the first day of class in 2020. Many approaches to course material delivery simply can’t ensure the affordability and accessibility today’s students require. With operational changes, institutions can provide the financial and academic support students need to be successful, including universal access to course materials and resources. 92% of 2-year students are already interested in bundling course materials with tuition to get a lower price. Limited budgets for innovation and education technology purchases aren’t new, and the coronavirus pandemic only exacerbated these challenges. Fortunately, grants provide a potential avenue to meet these needs through nearly $6 billion in annual awards. Colleges prepared to pursue these funds have an indisputable advantage when it comes to long-term institutional viability. During this session, we will talk about grant opportunities available to community colleges and ways to develop an intentional grantseeking strategy. Fred Peters, of Kilgore College, will share his experience working with the HP Grant Support Program to pursue grant funding for their innovative technology project needs.

The Wall Street Journal reports that 22 million Americans lost their jobs in just the first two months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, 32-42% of the jobs lost in COVID are not coming back (Barrera, Bloom, & Davis). 63% of Americans surveyed by Strada Network prefer short term credentials to a long-term degree. It is assumed that Americans struggling in the pandemic will turn to a community college to retrain (CCDaily, Aug 2020).

Effective assessment is challenging under normal circumstances. Rushing to deliver remote assessment in a period of uncertainty is harder still. In this session we will partner with Laura McCallister, Associate Professor of Mathematics at Palm Beach State College to share how instructors are able to use Gradescope to seamlessly administer and grade all of their existing assessments, and the impact AI has had in their remote instruction. We will discuss specifically how the platform has 1) helped instructors assess more effectively and save time by streamlining the grading workflow and 2) enabled students to learn from accelerated and robust feedback.

Mt. Hood Community College took a strategic approach in addressing the basic need challenges facing our students, from data to response to funding. A college team was established and tasked with gathering and using data to identify greatest needs, prioritize response efforts, ensure a coordinated effort, and create a campus-wide coalition to build capacity and develop shared understanding around this work. This session will share data around our students’ food and housing insecurities, and online access challenges, and explore the team’s response. In addition, how our college Foundation stepped up to support this effort will also be featured.

This session presents a conceptual framework for Equity-minded Teaching with Digital Learning that draws on our work with community colleges and broad-access universities in the Every Learner Everywhere network. It incorporates six key instructional practices backed by research evidence and dimensions of Zarretta Hammond’s Framework for Culturally Responsive Teaching. This interactive session will highlight specific tools and practices aligned with the framework that are being used to improve course success rates for students of color. They include digital supports for student-student collaborative learning, differentiation of content to align with learner interests, and new, more authentic ways to assess student learning. We have seen the impact that the last year has had on students at community colleges from enrollment to retention. As we move into 2021, we can continue to find success by making small and large adjustments to how we support our students – the challenge is prioritizing where to focus and what to adjust. In this session, hear directly from community college students as they share the challenges that they have faced and what has kept them moving toward their goal of completing their degree. They will share insights and feedback on what makes a difference to them in their student experience – how can we adjust how they receive input and feedback; where are opportunities to improve the classroom and co-curricular experience; how do they expect to be supported in their career search from a technology perspective, and much more. Leave this session with insights into student priorities and ways that your team can impact the student journey. SPEAKER(S): Amanda Kearney |

For first-generation students, higher education offers a gateway to career advancement, valued social capital, and intergenerational mobility. Despite the best efforts of instructors, first-generation students face numerous challenges to successfully completing a degree, evidenced in higher drop-out rates compared to their peers. Understanding those challenges can help inform course design strategies that foster a greater sense of inclusion and belonging that can help all students find academic success. We’ll explore how to improve equity, enrollment, and the student experience by improving student-to-student engagement. Fostering student engagement also reduces isolation and loneliness, a root cause of our growing student mental health crisis. Everyone wins when we meet students where they are and help them find their community - and most are not finding that belonging through social media. Join our workshop to hear directly from leaders at 2-year and 4-year institutions as they share what’s working to build community and commitment - and steps you can take to achieve gains at your institution in 2021 and beyond. Academic continuity planning became a focus in Florida after Hurricane Irma (2017). COVID-19 pushed things further at FSCJ, which established a high-meeting-frequency Academic Continuity Committee in Spring 2020. This ad hoc committee, established to "get the right people in the room" for complex crisis management discussions, has emerged as a transformative group that not only supports our pandemic response, but is rapidly improving the quality of institutional collaboration (especially through meaningful faculty involvement), with operational applications that extend beyond the pandemic and crisis management. The story, structure, and set-up insights will be shared. SPEAKER(S): John Wall |

Over the course of the 2020 calendar year, Advance CTE developed and piloted a workshop to help CTE leaders at the state and local level identify and address access and equity gaps using data. The workshop includes five major components: 1) raising awareness, 2) data analysis, 3) root cause analysis, 4) identification of practical strategies and 5) action planning. It builds upon the requirements — as well as opportunities — laid out in the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V) to help state and local leaders operationalize the commitments they made in their Perkins V plans.
