A Common Sense "Secret Formula" for Workforce Development Success
Exacting workforce development strategies has proven to be a decades-old mystery for many two-year colleges, state higher education agencies, and national departments. Where, what, and how to invest in tomorrow's workforce has remained a moving target for many reasons: constant shifting economies and conditions, changing priorities by administration, and an arguably backwards industry engagement approach by practitioners, generally. We are here to declare we have cracked the code and are ready to reveal our secret formula, and the best news: it's steeped in common sense.

Can Today’s Systems Prepare Learners for Tomorrow’s Careers?
The postsecondary pathway between high school and the workforce is inefficient and inequitable. This session will debate the best ways to meet our future postsecondary attainment and workforce needs. In “The Big Blur,” JFF proposes restructuring grades 11-14 with a new type of institution that is neither high school nor college to prepare young people for the world of work. However, community colleges are already transforming and adapting–through creative K-12 and workforce partnerships–to meet the needs of their students and communities. Which approach will prevail?

Creating an OER Microcredential for Faculty
Open Educational Resources (OER) can increase student learning while breaking down barriers of affordability and accessibility. Research shows students in OER courses more frequently have better grades and lower failure and withdrawal rates than their counterparts in courses that do not use OER. Montgomery College created an OER micro-credential that focuses on and measures relevant competencies, such as the ability to find OER and evaluate for rigor and a demonstration of open pedagogy. Through this faculty professional development, students can continue to be the biggest benefactors.

Engaging Adjuncts to Promote Student Success
Whether from pandemic related reductions, retirements or attrition of full-time faculty, community colleges have hired more adjunct faculty than in years prior to meet demands. With difficulties in faculty recruitment and hiring continuing to plague higher education, adjuncts likely will continue to play a prominent role in teaching and classroom engagement over the next several years. Institutions must provide adjuncts high quality development programs to ensure high quality teaching and high levels of engagement in the classroom.

Integrating DEI into Online Teaching and Beyond
How do we integrate DEI into online courses? With an online course, of course. With increased focus on DEI initiatives at our institutions, the need to develop strategies and resources for faculty is paramount. What may come naturally in the classroom requires intentional design online. A panel of three ITC member institutions will discuss the framework that resulted in a valuable professional development course that enables faculty to better learn and develop actionable strategies to better support DEI in online (and face to face) teaching.

Promoting Belonging and Equity in Course Curriculum
As education systems become increasingly diverse, it is crucial for diverse students to see themselves reflected in the course materials they consume as this may lead to higher persistence, retention and overall student success. It is also vital for non-marginalized students to gain a better understanding of the experiences of others particularly as they navigate a world which is much more diverse and global minded than ever before. This session will provide practical ways in which attendees can promote diversity and inclusion through their course content and feel confident doing so.

Promoting Volunteerism and DEI for Student Success
Student Success is enhanced by diverse representation in academia. Utilizing volunteerism increases diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) awareness and mentorship by examining the culture of the college and the community. As a result, students are more inclined to participate in college initiatives when they experience more diverse leadership throughout the institution. It is the goal of this workshop to demonstrate the impactful effects of volunteerism for continued professional growth and expansion of diverse networks necessary to assist with more inclusion in higher education for student success.

Providing unique experiences for your donor giving circle
Tulsa Community College (TCC) Foundation’s annual donor giving circle, President’s Society, had died off due to employee changes and the pandemic. To revitalize the program, TCC Foundation staff worked to create meaningful opportunities for donors to interact with the college president, faculty, and staff while having fun and learning more about the College. As a result, the President’s Society has increased its memberships significantly and provided experiences donors want to attend.

Put your money where your mouth is: budget and strategy alignment
The community college of the present offers what our students need today. However, if colleges are to remain relevant, institutions must pivot and support employees that will innovate, and seize opportunities, by getting them what they need, when they need it. Presenters will share the supplementary budget process they implemented which allows requestors to seek funding beyond their regular department’s operating budget any time of year. Participants will share systems from their institutions that help their colleges empower employees and encourage change.

Starting the Conversation Early: How Pre-Norming Shifts Assessment
When institutions assess student work, norming sessions are challenging if participants do not have a common understanding of the rubric language. Palo Alto College implemented “pre-norming sessions” months prior to the norming session to provide faculty and staff time for deeper conversations about how institutional rubrics play out in actual teaching. Participants shared "key assignments" and discussed rubric implications, both within disciplinary peer groups and with the larger group. This session introduces attendees to our college's prenorming process and provides evidence of its effectiveness.
